Thanks to you Pat for the absolutely fabulous time with Coursera. I've just received my mark from peers for the final assignment for a completed song written from scratch using the methods and tools so generously provided by you. The feedback was extremely positive and has made me feel so much more confident to continue in this endeavour. Thank you once again (I have all your books).

A huge thank you to you for a really wonderful, inspiring "Introduction to Songwriting" course via Coursera.

I was absolutely bowled over from day 1 by your approach, teaching style and great humour - and feel that I've learnt a tremendous amount in a short time.

Thank you a million for sharing your knowledge. I'm inspired to carry on and do much more songwriting now - and then, once I've got some more practice in, I hope to enroll on one of your online courses.

Incidentally, I played your first lecture to a technophobic relative to show her what an online course could be - and she was so impressed and engrossed that she's going to borrow a friend's computer and sign up for a course!
Thanks Pat!

I am just ending the online Corsera.org class and full of gratitude for the opportunity. I have purchased your books and will continue to study them. My songs are already sounding better and will apply all of the lessons to my songs when recording the next album.

Pat,
I took your online songwriting class and have learned so much. I first started out as a poet curious how to back my words in song or put them together in song form. 6 weeks was not enough but with your guidance and humor I am much farther than I ever would have been .Thank you for taking your time out and for being so awesome.

Thanks for your Coursera Songwriting class. I enjoyed it immensely. I just wish there was more about how to find the melody in the loops...I am a poet/lyricist that needs more help with the music part of songwriting. I did learn a lot about opening up the floodgates of possibility with different types of rhymes. I usually kind of write automatic writing...mostly perfect or near perfect rhyme. I have over 900 poems over at www.thestarlitecafe.com if you would like to check some out sometime.

Pat, your course is great! It's about singing and interpretation as much as tha actual writing (I've watched the master classes). Very cool thing to do, thanks!

The course is an amazing eye opener. The concepts are similar to clave in Latin music. I look forward to seeing if it even makes choreography more compelling.

Thank you for the tools.

Dear Pat
Your classes are incredible! I love the way you put your ideas across. You are immensely careful about how well you should be understood by your students. Great! This is my first ever online course and I really enjoy it. I wish I had the luck to be in your class for months on end. It is superb! With respect, Gireesh

Just dropping in to say thank you for the valuable lessons you are teaching online in the Coursera workshop.

I was not able to complete college when young, dad had stroke and all that, so money flowed to a stop. LOL.

Anyway, I wrote songs throughout life, got tips from peers, read books in the library, and didn't do too badly with peer acceptance of my material. BUT, since taking your course, (only in week three, ha ha) I have already re-analyzed a huge chunk of my portfolio and am inclined to rework many of them in the direction of WHO'S talking to Whom? LOVE it. So simple! Why didn't I see it before??? LOL.

Also, though, some of the material that I'd had small doubts about are now free and clear to go ahead with publishing, because after careful scrutiny, I realize that those particular songs are in perfect form. Only know this from taking your class, lol. I know, I laugh a lot! That's because I am Irish!

I know that with 65,000 students, from all over the world, enrolled in your class, you will not be able to see all of these thank you notes. But, I hope that anyone reading this will be amazed at the fact that you are teaching priceless information for free during this coursera course. And, that those of us who could never afford to get an education at the likes of Berklee College of Music are ever so grateful that you have chosen to teach this course.

I will definitely download your books for back up to this course, and who knows, you and I just might meet someday when I get nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song for film!!! Hey, it's a goal! At 59, who says you should stop dreaming? You can hear a few of my songs on you tube. The lighter stuff! Ever Yours, Norine Mungo

Hi Pat,
I am enrolled in your online course through Coursera.org. I have been writing songs for several years now. Your course has helped me identify the characteristics of my songs that people enjoy and those that need to be re-worked.

You are an amazing teacher. I downloaded your books from Amazon and they are tools that I will treasure.

Thanks,

Hi Pat! I was one of the first students to go through your Songwriting course at Berklee back in the late 80s! I graduated in 1990 with my Bachelors in Music, with my major in Songwriting. :)

Your training, and Jimmy K's music writing classes, changed my life. I'm currently taking your online course at Coursera.org as a "Brush up" to lyricwriting. I have also bought most all of your books. :)

I've been teaching music lessons for 23 years, ever since I moved to Florida, and the last 3 exclusively online on my own website: MyMusicExpert.com. One of the classes I offer is songwriting! Your insight and technique is being passed down to the younger generation in more ways than you know!

I have also written a ton of songs (all hidden away) and I'm getting ready to start recording and releasing them all, now that I have the time in my life (house is paid off!) to do so!

I am also starting a new Songwriting company with my cousin, who is well connected and works with Cox Radio. So things are turning towards writing and recording as well as writing and selling!

I just wanted to take a moment and let you know how much I appreciate your instruction and training, both from back in the 80s, and NOW online!

Sincerely,
Doug Sinning

Hi Pat,
I am a music teacher. My sister who is my hero, passed away at the age of 50. One of the things she had started was to teach kids how to write their own music. I am not formally trained as a musician and hung on her coat tails for my music information.
You have given me the voice to continue her work of teaching students. Thank you so very much.

I am enrolled in your Songwriting Course online and must comment on your ability to keep me, at 72, totally riveted to your every word. Now, retaining it is equestrian of another complexion entirely. The week 2 exams were as though I hadn't even heard the lectures or the material EVER before.

I'm sticking it out because I am able to glean and retain bits and pieces of each lesson. I will review repeatedly until they blend with my sparse gray-matter. A recent stroke has left me both paralyzed and mute so I hope to add lyrics to my existing melodies.

Again, thanks, Pat

I have taken many songwriting workshops, but your Coursera class trumps them all. Your approach is so precise when it comes to taking a first draft and moving it forward, or making it two songs, or even dropping it. Your teaching style is deceptively easy, and most effective. Thanks to you and Berklee for sharing around the world. The world needs all the songs it can get, though most may just reach a small community. People are learning that songwriting is a worthy art form apart from the top ten.

Pat:

Just had your classes at Songposium (all of them).

I have been Object writing since I returned to New Mexico with another writer who had two of your three classes on Friday.

I am having trouble leaving the prompts behind. I personify the prompt quite easily but get stuck in that rut.

I know you can't respond to everybody, but please know you are the Yoda of not only Lyrics but the whole songwriting enchilada (a whole bunch o''ladas - enter the New Mexico analogy).

Please give my best to your lovely wife Claire (sp?).

Oh, and I thought it was really clever how you created this whole "unstable thing" to disguise your own (mental) instability - most likely the key to your success (cackle, giggle); no really - all seriousness aside (oh, is that the correct way to say that?).

I'm gonna try it out my self - complete with one of your shirts and see if I too can better baffle with b$*#&" while improving the instability of my writing! I am sure the shirt will help immensely (...you always wore it).

Thank you so very much for everything I learned at your courses - God, to have metrics with which to work is a blessing, Pat. Thank you so very much.

One last thing...so if I could take another class after all of the ones I took at Songposium with you, what would it be?

Billy St. Johns - out

P.S. My e-mail is on the list Claire passed around. I would love to hear from you guys, but either way, many blessings to you both.

As a songwriter for 30 years and a lecturer for 10, I found your lyrical insights absolutely fascinating. I hope to be able to continue to deliver the kind of inspiration that you already have, to many aspiring writers of the future. Thank you so much, Matthew

Hi Pat, I just wanted to say thanks for your two seminars I attended recently at Songwriter's Summit 2012 in Sydney. Lessons I've learnt from those sessions made the price of attending worthwhile on their own. Hopefully, I'll be able to attend more of your workshops/courses in the future
Best Regards
